What Is the Best Major for Undergrads Who Want to Go to Law School?

What should you major in if you plan to go to law school after your undergraduate degree? The answer to that question is complicated and it depends on your strengths and goals. Law schools usually pay little attention to your undergraduate degree, other than your grade-point-average or GPA. I am not aware of any law school that requires students to have a specific undergraduate major.
Which major is the best? Law school requires a tremendous amount of writing. A degree in English and writing is very helpful for students who do not know exactly what kind of law they want to practice. With good writing skills, students will be able to focus on the legal material and studying rather than honing their writing skills. Students that hope to practice criminal law, either as a prosecutor or defense attorney should consider a bachelor degree in criminology. A criminology degree will make the student familiar with law enforcement practices and procedures. Although a degree in criminology can be helpful if you plan to practice criminal defense, a degree in business management can be helpful if you plan to have your own law firm. In fact a Bachelor of Arts or Science in Business is a good foundation for anyone who intends to go to law school because attorneys can use the knowledge they learn in business school to help them manage paralegals, administrative staff and subordinate attorneys.
A degree in history is helpful because it allows you to better understand the events that affected our forefathers and therefore helped craft the law as it developed. An undergraduate degree in history is also helpful because your skills in reading comprehension will likely be honed after four or five years of doing so much reading, and in law school you will be reading approximately 100 pages per week, per subject or about 500 pages per week.
For those students who want to eventually teach law or primarily want to do research, an undergraduate degree in constitutional law or political science is a good choice. Many colleges do not offer bachelor degrees in constitutional law. If you cannot find a program with a constitutional law major, you can elect to major in political science. Political science is a broad platform for students who are considering political careers or teaching careers.
For students who want to do research, there is another degree available. The J.S.D. or S.J.D. is the Doctorate of Juridical Science, it is the highest degree available in the United States. The J.S.D. is intended to be the terminal degree for students and scholars who study the law. A major in constitutional law, along with a high grade point average, will facilitate your admission into a graduate and post graduate school of law.
The major you select for your undergraduate degree will have a small effect on your admission to law school. However your success in law school may be effected by your major in undergraduate school because your ability to write well will have a direct effect on your success in law school. If you already write well, you can consider a major that is closely aligned with the field you hope to practice in.
