Business Needs: Developing A "Working" Relationship

What are the key elements to building a successful business relationship? Some people say it's all about networking; some believe it's about being authentic. Others will talk about being high in emotional intelligence or in learning to display the right body language. It feels simple and confusing at the same time.

In my work helping individuals and teams build effective working relationships, I tend to emphasize the basics because it is through simplifying the everyday act of connecting with others that you are able to build towards deeper and more effective relationships. Whether you are connecting on a business basis or on a personal level, the essence of what makes the connection work is the same. Our personal and our professional lives continuously intersect and we carry our values with us. As we've seen with the many disgraced public figures, people don't differentiate between the two. More and more, we are expected to display integrity in our behaviour and our attitudes. The power of social media obviates the separation between our public and private selves. Our relationships and interactions must be sincere and consistent.

I break the basics of building working relationships down into three elements: authenticity, reliability and social intelligence. There must be congruence between the elements and all three must be present and maximized. Let me briefly explain what each element means:

AuthenticityThis element is focused on the qualities of honesty, integrity and transparency. Authenticity seems so simple but hard to do. When you interact with somebody, they will be on high alert for this characteristic. They will evaluate your truthfulness and sincerity. Do you tell the truth. Do you willingly share information about yourself? Are you willing to admit to making a mistake. And do you share credit for your successes with others? How intently do you listen? Do you keep your ego in check and are you willing to allow the other person to shine.

Reliability This element is about consistency and follow-through. Do you do what you say you are going to do. Can I count on you to be there for me, no matter what. People also look for flexibility and adaptability in your behaviour and in your reaction to changing circumstances. People who are reliable are always ready and able to help and we know that they will do their best to help us accomplish our goals.

Social Intelligence How well you read and respond appropriately to other people is a measure of your ability to trust yourself and empathize with others. The accuracy of our judgment stems from our ability to know ourselves and to validate our experiences. That is why our social intelligence improves over time- we have more and more experience upon which to draw on. Having a self-confidence allows us to reach out to others and empathize with them. When people know that you genuinely have their best interests at heart, they will respond by reaching out to you.

Starting with these three basic elements is the first step towards building lasting and effective relationships. It's a matter of who takes the first step. Why not let it be you?
