Simple Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Cancer

In the western world the pace of daily life is severely impacting our food choices. We are busy, stressed and often do not get enough time to exercise or prepare healthy food. In addition many people work in front of a computer all day and do not get enough sunlight. Making the correct lifestyle decisions, especially in terms of diet, is crucial to our health as research suggests poor eating habits increase the risk of getting cancer.

In 2007 the World Cancer Research Fund created an expert report entitled 'Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective'. Researchers looked at all evidence concerning the links between cancer and diet, exercise and body fat. The overall results were quite predictable, in that the findings ascertained that people can reduce their risk of cancer through healthy eating, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. However, the links between body fat and cancer were stronger than previously thought.

The panel created ten recommendations from the research. These are:

1. Body fat: Be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight

2. Exercise: Be physically active every day

3. Weight-gain promoting food and drink: Limit consumption of food dense in energy; Avoid drinks containing sugar

4. Plant food: Most food intake should be of plant origin

5. Animal Foods: Limit consumption of red meat and avoid processed meat

6. Alcohol: Limit alcoholic drinks

7. Preservation, processing, and preparation: Limit salt consumption; Avoid moldy cereals (grains) or pulses (legumes)

8. Dietary supplements: Aim to meet nutritional needs through food alone

9. Breastfeeding: Mothers to breastfeed; children to be breastfed

10. Cancer survivors: Follow the recommendations for cancer prevention

Looking at these recommendations many of us may be concerned that we are not following the correct diet or exercise program. It is easy to get caught up in nights out drinking and quick takeaway meals as they are so convenient and, unfortunately, tasty. There are three important things to remember when making changes to our lifestyles:

1. Get in touch with how you actually feel when you have had too much to drink, eat unhealthy food or do not exercise. It is likely that you don't actually feel very good at all.

2. Remember that even small changes can have a positive impact. You do not need to go on a drastic detox, although some people prefer this approach.

3. Your health is important as it allows you to enjoy life to the full. Poor lifestyle choices can increase your chances of getting cancer.

These lifestyle changes are equally important for people who have had a diagnosis of cancer. In fact many are adopting detoxification diets and other methods of reducing the toxins in their bodies. Angeles Health International offers an alternative cancer treatment called functional oncology.

The program consists of many different stages, one of which is cellular nutrition. This includes detox, alkalinization, a hypo allergenic food plan, supplementation, amino acid IV therapy and essential fatty acid IV therapy. Functional oncology is therefore a holistic approach to cancer treatment.
