If you are going to be a successful investor, you have to follow certain procedures. The first thing you need to do is understand the investment vehicle and learn how it works. If you don't understand how to invest, you could end up making a lot of mistakes which can turn out to be expensive.

On June 14th The National Federation of Independent Businesses ("NFIB") released its monthly survey of Small Business Economic Trends and there were a few interesting insights that I wanted to share. The NFIB is a member organization that represents more than 300,000 small businesses in the United States, ranging from sole proprietors to businesses with hundreds of employees. It is important to understand the economic conditions for small businesses because they constitute such a large proportion of the employment base of the economy.

The NFIB survey of Small Business Economic Trends, as reported through the month of May, yielded the following insights:
Sales: 25% of all small businesses reported that their top business problem was having weak sales. It's not simply a question of slow growth, but rather a matter of continual decline. There are still more small businesses that are reporting declining sales than those reporting growing sales, so the trend is still negative.
Credit Availability: Access to credit is not one of the most pressing problems for most small businesses. In fact, only 3% reported that credit access & financing were their top problem, and 92% responded that they had no credit problems or additional financing needs of any kind. (In a survey last year, most business owners stated that they wouldn't borrow money even if it were free because they still wouldn't have the end demand to justify the increased headcount and new equipment.)
Employment: On a seasonally-adjusted basis, there are more businesses that intend to reduce their workforce over than next 3 months than those that plan to hire new workers. This is a disturbing change in the trend, as this is the first month since September of 2010 that there were more small businesses planning to lay-off employees than to hire them.
Inflation: 10% of small businesses reported inflation as being their biggest problem, the highest percentage of businesses reporting that inflation was a problem since before the credit crisis. Even more interesting, 31% of all small businesses reported that they are raising their average selling prices for their goods or services, with only 16% reporting that they are lowering prices. This is another change in the trend as small businesses had been cutting prices during the previous two years.


So, putting this all together we see that the average small business has declining sales, is laying-off employees, and is raising prices for its goods & services. These are interesting and unusual business dynamics. A business that is facing declining revenue generally doesn't resort to price increases to solve its problems!

Sadly, this may be a reflection of the fact that many small businesses are facing significant cost pressures and declining revenues at the same time, but since most small businesses have lean operations to begin with, they may be left with no alternative but to finally pass rising cost pressures through to the end buyer, even in the face of declining sales. Additional recent data is consistent with this view. On June 15th the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that its measure of "core inflation" had risen more than expected, suggesting that inflationary conditions may be moving beyond food and energy prices and are now spreading to the broader economy.

During the past few years of recession and crisis, the government response has relied on 4 basic strategies: maintain extremely low interest rates, maintain high levels of deficit spending to fill the gap in private demand, create tax incentives for consumers to buy goods, and provide tax incentives for businesses to hire employees and buy equipment. However, it's readily apparent that most businesses don't want to borrow money or hire employees because consumers don't want to buy more goods or services. In fact, many consumers are trying to save money for the first time in many years. Also on June 15th - one day after the NFIB survey - a poll from NBC News/Wall Street Journal indicated that almost half of all Americans believe the U.S. economy is headed back into recession. Regardless of whether or not these respondents turn out to be correct, their own behavior is no doubt one of the reasons for our continued slow economy. People who fear recession are likely to save more and spend less, so to a certain extent the fear of an impending recession has a self-fulfilling effect.

It's fair to question if our government's policies have exceeded their usefulness and may be working in a counterproductive manner at this point. For example, if low interest rates do not stimulate credit growth, but do stimulate asset price inflation and higher commodity prices, then it's certainly reasonable to question if we are deriving a net benefit from current monetary policy. I'm not sure that we are.

At a broader level, the recent small business survey continues to support a rather pessimistic outlook for the remainder of this year. The economic recovery is anemic, small businesses are under extraordinary pressure, energy and food prices are higher, government stimulus is expiring, quantitative easing is coming to an end, state and local governments are cutting spending and laying-off employees and now the federal government appears poised to implement some fiscal restraint of its own. Two years into the recovery, the economy may be approaching a stall point.

Are you treating yourself like an Investment Advisor or like a stock broker? There is a huge difference, or at least a potential difference in how an investment advisor would manage your portfolio versus how a broker would handle it.

If you are managing your own retirement account, your own investment account to develop wealth, you should be acting as a self-employed Investment Advisor. In SEC jargon that means you have a fiduciary obligation to manage the account for the best results regardless of other personal objectives. This applies equally to your spouse's account.

• Commissions - when they place a trade for certain types of mutual funds they can get as much as 6% off the top. They may even get commissions for stock and ETF trades. And they may get more commissions when a position is sold.

• Flat Fee - they charge a percentage of the value of your portfolio; usually around 1% to 1.5% on an annual basis. This ties their management performance to the future value of your portfolio. A good way to do it, in my opinion.

Back to how you treat yourself.

Managing your portfolio in a fiduciary manner means:

• Emotions must be kept in check. Don't buy or sell because you like Ford's latest car model, or hate it or your wife thinks a certain brand lipstick stinks. If Wells Fargo is going down but that's where you bank, don't let your emotional bond keep you from acting in the best interest of your retirement account.

• News reports and broadcasts must be kept in perspective. What makes headlines today may be so old in a week that the effect on a stock or industry (ETF or mutual fund) may be meaningless whether the news pushed you towards buying or selling.

• Tips from friends are just that. A tip may lead you to do research and analysis but that is the only direction it should lead. Think about it; who ever decides on what to buy at a restaurant based on how much they are going to tip at the end?

Responsible investing and management of your portfolio should be based on solid analysis. If you are doing it yourself, then a good technical analysis program that allows you to customize it to fit your particular goals and objectives would be my recommendation. In this fashion you take out ego and emotions and can base your decisions on what is best for you.

In my work with cancer patients I'm privy to the common mistakes made by many patients which routinely harm their health and may cost them their lives. I write this article in the hope these mistakes can be avoided. This article is derived from observations made in a sample group comprising 13,000 patients over a period of 37 years. Lest the article appear too negative it is worth mentioning that cancer patients in 2011 are living longer and there are many wonderful advances in cancer medicine. In fact patients will do better when forewarned of these common mistakes and at our institute we consider it a part of 'preventative medicine' to do so. Please pass this article around to anyone with cancer.

1. The most fundamental mistake is a failure to understand the nature of cancer. Sadly, perhaps due to fear of the topic, this is widespread, not only among the cancer patients we assist but among some naturopaths we encounter. Failing to understand the nature of cancer will influence all your treatment choices. The following is a brief outline.

At the time of diagnosis, cells will have been detaching themselves from the primary tumour, entering the blood supply and seeking to establish a 'new' colony. This process may have been going on for years before the first tumour is evident. These 'seed cells' called circulating tumour cells (CTCs), may lay dormant for years or activate and settle down at a site of least resistance and grow into a tumour. CTCs begin circulating when the original tumour increases in size from 1.5 - 2mm, about the size of a grain of rice.

It is worth remembering that cancer is a systemic disease from the onset and the tumour its late stage symptom. Cancer cells can only thrive in a specific environment with an impaired immune system and impaired mechanisms of regulation and repair.

With a better understanding of cancer, patients will realise they must act quickly and activate a sensible treatment plan. This sense of urgency and fear of conventional cancer medicine may cause patients to seek alternative therapies; which by nature are an alternative to conventional treatments (allopathic) and we do not recommend that path. We do however, support proven complementary therapies done with knowledge of the allopathic doctor and/or oncologist. Communication and transparency between our institute, the patients and the doctors and oncologists is crucial because there are times when even accepted complementary supplements can clash with cancer medicines. (See 4.)

The good news is that in 2011 the new breed of 'targeted therapies' used by oncologists are getting excellent results with lower side effects and people are living longer-up to 90 % of certain breast and testicular cancer patients will be alive after 5 years.

When integrative medicine is added to the scientific advances it combines the discipline of modern science with the wisdom of ancient healing. It can transform the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the lives of people living with chronic or life-threatening illness.

Proven complementary therapies such as touch therapies, mind-body therapies, acupuncture, sound nutrition, physical activity and fitness, and dietary supplements are worthy additions as long as they are not substitutes for mainstream medical care.

When used in concert with medical treatment they can help alleviate stress, reduce pain and anxiety, manage physical and emotional symptoms, and enhance quality of life for cancer patients.

2. Second deadly mistake - a failure to understand the nature of 'Dr Internet.

This mistake can powerfully influence patient treatment decisions. There is a huge cost in believing 'that which is repeated often enough must be true.' The internet is dominated by unproven alternative cancer cures but to the unsuspecting patient they may be inclined to believe the increasingly sophisticated and emotionally convincing websites that promote alt/med. The following Google searches were conducted on Firefox and illustrate how difficult it is to find balanced scientific papers on alt/med products or therapies. The following searches (on Firefox in early June) yielded these 'results'....

· Google search for 'black salve' - last week May 2011 = 8.5 mil results - this week June 4th = 9.2 mil results - June 8th = 9.34 mil results - June 14 = 10.5 mil (Up 2 million results in just over two weeks - what will it be next week?)

· Google search - 'apricot cures cancer' = 5 mil results

· Google search - 'Gerson Diet cures cancer' 1.8 mil results

· Google search - 'nature cures cancer' 320 mil results

· Google search - 'alternative cures cancer' = 6.5 mil results

· Google search - 'wake up cure cancer now' = 2.5 mil results

· Google search 'science cures cancer' = 6.25 mil results. In this case I was looking for scientific papers but the results 'flipped' to 'cannabis cancer cures' (it took over the search). This did not happen in quite the same way for Internet Explorer

· Google search - meditation cures cancer = 3.9 mil results

· Google search - cancer cleanses = 11.4 mil results (June 14 = 12.7 mil (up by 1.3 mil results in over 2 weeks)

As you can see, 'Dr Internet' is quite biased. Most of the Google results are from sites with commercial interests or those promoting an ideology such as 'raw foodism.' Good medical science results from respected bodies like the National Cancer Institute of America or Memorial Sloan Kettering of NY are not so easy to locate. Both have excellent research papers on complementary and alt/med products and therapies.

3. Third deadly mistake - Buying into the prevalent conspiracy paradigm that 'Big Pharma' is greedy and evil-that it's a tool of the wealthy who want to keep ordinary people sick so they can make more money. Whilst the medical system and industry is not perfect, it is at least regulated and under scientific scrutiny and rigor.

Such theories create unhelpful polarisation and are an attempt to invalidate advances in cancer science, medicine and pharmaceutical commerce while emotively promoting alt/med or a nature ideology. These beliefs can border on fundamentalism. The victims, as always, are the unsuspecting cancer patients.

The theory is also very imbalanced-nobody is mentioning the greed or dishonesty of alt/med practitioners or supplement sellers. Some of our patients have spent over $100,000 on unproven or even disproven alt/med therapies and regimens. Many of these treatments are kept secret. Patients at a 'cancer cure expert,' a naturopath, were told not to tell anybody of the 'secret' treatments (costing $1100 a week) because the evil AMA or Big Pharma wants to stop them 'curing' cancer patients so they can continue to 'slash, burn and poison.'

4. Fourth deadly mistake - A poor understanding of nutrition and basic biology. A belief that 'more is better' can be dangerous for cancer patients. The mistaken belief prevails that if certain foods or supplements can boost your immune system, enabling your body to fight off the cancer, then large doses will be more effective. Patients fail to consider that supplements are very concentrated and quite unnatural as the following study shows.

A study from the US National Cancer Institute in 1994 published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at the effects of beta carotene, a well-known anti-oxidant with cancer-fighting properties, on the incidence of lung cancer in men. One group of men were (sic) put on a balanced diet high in fruit and vegetables high in beta- carotene or pro-vitamin A, found in orange foods such as carrot and sweet potato. The next group was given beta-carotene supplements and the final group was given a placebo. Not only did the group with the fruit and vegetable intake get a lower incidence of cancer, but the group taking the supplements had a higher incidence of cancer than the placebo group and the trial had to be terminated.

In our sample group we have commonly found patients imbibing toxic levels of some elements (often copper), trace elements, minerals and fat soluble vitamins. Some supplements commonly taken can impede or undo the allopathic cancer medicine prescribed, hormone blockers such as Tamoxifen or Arimidex and some chemotherapies, for example.

The 'chemical cocktail effect' is an unknown. It refers to the unpredictable effect of concentrates in supplements, herbal medicines mixing with concentrates in other supplements, potentially creating metabolic mayhem. A result observe in blood diagnostics of our patients.

The advance of cancers impairs quality of sleep. This conclusion was confirmed by dozens of recent studies on sleep in cancer patients. Official medical science at the moment can not explain this effect of cancer insomnia. About 170 Russian medical doctors suggested a simple mechanism that explains the cause of poor and good sleep. It is based on changes in automatic breathing patterns and brain oxygen levels.

If you monitor sleep of the friends and relatives, you could realize that their morning state and quality of health rely on one parameter mainly: their respiratory pattern whilst sleeping. Whenever their breathing is deep and heavy, they currently have a worse health state. Whenever their respiratory pattern is slow and easy, they've got better sleep and the health. Consequently, as soon as humans breathe extra air, we cannot improve O2 levels of our arterial blood, yet we lower CO2 quantity inside the alveoli of the lungs, arterial blood, and all other cells.

This specific substance (CO2) is a dilator of blood vessels. For this reason, over-breathing results in shrinking of arteries and arterioles. This is actually the core cause that describes why we can pass out after nearly two min of deliberate or voluntary hyperventilation. A reduced amount of oxygen and glucose is provided for the nervous cells in the brain.

In addition, CO2 is regarded as a strong tranquilizer and sedative of the brain. Neurological research publications showed that lack of CO2 leads to over-excitement of brain. This is another contributing factor for insomnia in cancer.

For all these reasons, your heavy and fast respiration patterns can produce insomnia. Furthermore, if one gets rid of his over-breathing, he are going to be free from his cancer malignancy and insomnia all at once.

About 170 Russian health professionals examined hundreds of subjects with cancer malignancy. These general practitioners teach the Buteyko breathing method. They learned that a simple DIY body oxygen test adequately predicts health condition of individuals with cancer malignancy. If all these persons have the ability to lessen the pace of their basal respiratory patterns (breathe less and slower), they acquire improved tissue oxygenation. I first saw the patient at the front desk, trying to compose herself as she gave her insurance information and co-payments to the financial representative. Our center is always cold, an old house renovated with air conditioning that makes it either too hot or too cold. She was shivering from cold and crying, struggling to compose herself. And so often, depression and anxiety appear together. I brought her something to drink and waited as she got her blood work taken. At times, she was tearful as she talked.

I asked her if I could give her a gentle shoulder massage while she waited to see the doctor. First I taught her a relaxation technique that I use with lots of patients, something to focus on while I massaged her shoulders. It is an easy one: Breathe in, think of a word, breathe out, think of another. Once she could do that, I massaged her hands for a few minutes until she was called into the exam room. I know the importance of patients telling their stories. So we talked. I listened.

A few days later I got a phone call from her. She wanted me there on her first day of chemotherapy. I was across the street at the other center, but told her to call me when they started and I would walk over. When I walked in and saw her face, her smile was so genuine, her eyes lit up, it amazed me how different she looked from a few days ago. I hardly recognized her.

To decrease anxiety in a treatment center, this is what I do: bring blankets and refreshments. Talk about our families and vacations and jobs. Share photos of grandchildren, commiserate over parenting challenges. Laugh. Give hugs for good news and extra hugs when the news is not so good. Depending on the patient, massage can also be done. It can calm someone's heart and put them on a beach someplace. When there is a lot of anxiety and isolation, the personal contact of massage can offer a simple, brief diversion.

I never forget that each patient may come in with a host of pre-existing conditions. In our work with people in cancer treatment, each patient comes in with a whole physical and emotional history. We can't forget or overlook those conditions. In the case of anxiety and depression, someone may need extra care. I am mindful of this as I work.

Whenever a group of people asks for my help with advice and direction on putting on a benefit fundraiser for a friend or loved one with an illness or debilitating injury who is facing financial catastrophe, one of the first questions they ask is, "How do we advertise this benefit?" They ask about taking out an ad in the newspaper, on radio and even television. But my answer usually surprises them because my advice is you don't need to advertise it but you do need to get the word out - and there is a difference.

The first thing to keep in mind is that except in rare occurrences, strangers are not going to come to your benefit! This may sound harsh, but use yourself as an example. I am sure you've seen newspaper ads for a benefit or heard one on radio or TV. And how many times have you walked into your local convenience store over the years and have seen a poster advertising a benefit? Did any of these ads ever entice you to go to the benefit? I'll bet not and it's not because you're hard-hearted, but rather, you don't know the person for whom the benefit is being held.

With that in mind, let's change our advertising approach to make sure that on the day of the benefit you've got a line out the door of people waiting to get in! The key is to simply make sure the word gets out to the family, friends and co-workers of the person the benefit is being held for. If the benefit is being held for a child, get the word out to all of mom and dad's co-workers, their friends, both sides of the family as well as the child's classmates and their parents. Bottom line - make sure everyone in that person's life circle is made aware of the benefit. If you can cover that base, you'll have a full house.

To get the word out, begin with the obvious - email, Facebook, Twitter and whatever other internet social network you may be a member of. Ask everyone you know if they might possibly be able to post a company-wide email at work. Contact the local newspaper (especially the smaller community newspapers) on the outside chance they would advertise your event for free. At the very least, be sure all of your local newspapers, radio and television stations receive a flyer or news release about your event for their Community Calendar. Sometimes news departments pick up these items to use as 'filler' stories. If you want posters, try contacting the local beer distributor (Miller, Budweiser). These companies will often front $500 worth of the cost of printing the posters as long as their logo is prominently displayed.

All of these advertising vehicles are meant to do one thing - to remind family, friends and co-workers that, "Oh yeah, mark the calendar - it's Bob's benefit that day."

Johanna Budwig who died at the age of 95 in 2003 was a brilliant German Biochemist and spent years researching the relationship between fatty acids and chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer. She was a leading authority on fats and oils.

She discovered that, the blood of people with cancer always had gross deficiencies of phosphatides and lipoproteins while healthy people did not have this deficiency. This deficiency resulted in a reduced oxygen levels in the cells. The recipe for the flaxseed and cottage cheese is;

6 tblspns organic cottage cheese or quark
3 tblspns of flaxseed oil

Others are adding the following;

2 tblspns of raw milk
1 tsp of honey
2 tblspns of ground flaxseeds
Fresh fruit or berries to taste


Blend the flaxseeds in a coffee grinder, add pine or walnuts if desired and mix only the amount you are consuming at one time. It must be used fresh.

Do not add anything to the mixture after it's made.

Don't buy pre-ground flaxseed as it goes rancid soon after grinding.
