Things You Should Never Pay for in Your Online Business

The first item you should never pay for in an online business is...

Advertising - You cannot track the results

Never pay for advertising that you cannot track the results to. It is pointless to spend tons of money on pay-per-click ads without analyzing the results of your campaigns. I know of many people who spend countless amounts of money for pay-per-click ads to generate traffic to their links or website, only to make a paltry sum of money.

Whenever you start a pay-per-click campaign for a product or service you wish to promote, start a new spreadsheet to track the results of your campaign. Start small and track the results before committing to a larger ad budget. As long as you can get a reasonable return on your money, this is a profitable ad campaign. For example if you pay $500 for a certain keyword and you are able to generate sales of $1500 or more, then this is a profitable campaign which should be continued.

Links to your website

There are web masters or online business owners who pay companies or individuals money in order to get link referrals to their websites. They know that if they have external links linking to their website, their site can get ranked higher in the search engines. However, the problem with this approach is that there are some organizations that use robots to generate links to other people's website and these links generated may not be related to your website's niche. In this case, your website will get ranked lower and in serious cases it may be banned from search engines.

Forum postings

If you have been online for a length of time, you know that forum postings is one way to drive traffic to your site. Forum postings are a way to build community by helping people in your related niche do something or achieve something faster, better and easier. However, do not pay for people to write forum posting for you. If you have something useful to contribute to the forums, by all means go ahead and contribute. Paying someone to contribute to forums on your behalf can sometimes sound 'trite' if they are not familiar with your style of writing.

Although you may be eager to drive lots of traffic online in order to succeed in your online business, these are some of the things which you should never pay money for. Anything worthwhile takes time and effort to build, if you want to build a sustainable web business that can one day operate without much involvement from you, start to build your foundation now.
