Should The Legalization Of Marijuana Be Withheld Because Of Addiction?

The last twenty-four months have been an interesting time for sitting back and watching what's been happening in the world of drug legalization, especially marijuana, in the United States. It cannot be debated that this is the first time in over 30 years that a massive push has be levelled by the masses to forge a decisive flip in the current legal proceedings and laws that would turn a substance from illegal and taboo, to legal and accepted openly.

Most of us know the reasons that those who support the legalization of marijuana use for their campaigning. It is full of messages such as 'marijuana is medicine', 'marijuana is a harmless plant', 'marijuana is safer than alcohol', etc.

But more interestingly, what is the most prominent argument that is used by those who reside on the side of opposing the legalization of marijuana?

Addiction.

It cannot be argued that addiction of any substance is a tragic, corrosive and debilitating state of affairs and the rate of addiction seems to be increasing in the Western world. So where do we start on tackling this issue? I mean, there are so many symptoms of addiction that can be treated and managed... but how successful are these methods?

The first place that the West looks at when it comes to identifying problems to solve is the external. For example, majority of women who feel low self-esteem are highly identified with their external appearance. They question how beautiful they are in terms of the looks for example.

When someone has a problematic acne condition it is automatically thought that the problem lies exclusively with the person's skin.

Could it be however that there is something more happening below the surface?

In terms of the acne situation, many naturopaths and holistic doctors agree that acne is a sign of toxicity that the body is trying to expel to protect vital organs. The main source of the acne comes from a deficient digestive system.

When it comes to the notion of addiction amazing insights have been recently produced by leading psychologists and medical doctors that are starting to unravel the mysteries of why some people become addicted to certain substances and some people do not. If marijuana was an addictive substance than everybody who smokes it would become addicted right?

...So why doesn't everyone become addicted then!?

Dr Gabor Mate, author of best-selling book 'In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts', has began to share his insights from treating hard-core addicts for years that addiction does not lie in the substance itself but in the person's psychological makeup. He has found that every person who has walked into the addiction treatment centre he works at was abused in childhood in some form. Especially shocking is that he has observed every female addicted to hard drugs he has met had been sexually abused in their childhood.

Abuse can take many forms. Physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse are all different forms of the same problem that causes disruptions in normal brain development to occur in people that leave them susceptible to looking outside of themselves to fill essential human needs.

One of the most important factors in people who have addiction problems is that they have been shown to have an under-developed region of the brain that is responsible for the production of endorphins; the love chemical. Endorphins are the 'feel good' chemical that is produced in our brain and also gives us the feeling and core human experience of being loved.

If this essential human need is not met by having a healthy, nurturing and loving upbringing people will naturally look to something outside of them to fill in the gap. Our Western culture also gives support to this way of living as majority of advertising and marketing is aimed at exposing and feeding off people's deep insecurities that are usually stemming from negative childhood experiences.

Using the idea of addiction to stand against legalizing marijuana may be seen as a little incongruent by some now these new insights into human development have surfaced. However, before anybody even considers legalizing marijuana it must be known that we need to get ourselves and our family houses in order. It must be said that legalization of marijuana may not offer the best solution at the moment given the current psychological state of most people.
