How to Run an Effective Website

Getting a website is one thing, making it appealing and interesting quite another.

The websites we visit keep us going back to them by having something we want, need or have an interest. To be an effective website there are certain things or rules follow. If you have a site just for the fun of it, it really does not matter you can do what you want!

When we flick up a site, we process what is on the screen in a matter of seconds and decide whether to stay and see more. Things we are looking for must be there, a site has to tell us what it is about and the benefits it provides all within the initial screen view. This is commonly called above the fold. This is where your visitors land, and hopefully they stay for longer than a few seconds.

Colors and fonts used make an impact on the comfort of viewers. The style of website often determines the colors and fonts used. The colors should be aesthetically pleasing and coordinated with the subject of the site. For example, the layout and colors of a gaming site are presented quite differently from that of a gardening site.

The font should be easy to read, you often come across sites that have background colors that make reading the information very difficult and tiring. These can put people off very quickly.

Is the site layout such that navigation around the site is easy and logical? Most sites will have about us and contact us pages. These give a clear indication as to the reason for the site and the ability to reach the site owner if you want to know more. Another reason is to acquire a list. This is about building up many interested parties who may later buy from you or add to the comments. If you want to make some money from your list this is the reason for building it.

Some of the other items that may add to the interest to your site are the addition of social networks like Facebook, and Twitter. Other multimedia like videos can add interest to your site if they are appropriate. Bear in mind that if you are trying to attract Google search engines, they seem to overlook the videos and go for the text at this stage.

Unless you are aiming at a specific market, write your Blog or website articles for the perceived audience or market. If you are selling a product or products, make sure you have a call to take the required action, whether it is just signing up, or buying your product. If you do not ask, you will not get the response you want.
