The Power of Outside Perspective
We all know the phrase "a doctor can't diagnose herself". Even the best of them have to go see other doctors to figure out the problem. This is no different for business owners and small design firms.
The problem. We are very close to our own design businesses. We live, breath, and dream what we do. Right or wrong - it's all ours, and we are married to it for better or for worse. But being this close to your own design business also means it is hard to see what we are doing wrong. Marinating IN the business makes it very challenging to recognize what the issues are and how to correct them. What we are often left with is feeling frustrated and disappointed without really knowing what to do about it.
Solution. Without the benefit of outside point of view, we can be stuck in this place running in circles for a long time. In my own experience, the only way to get out of your own way is to get outside perspective. When someone else examines your business, they are not as attached or vested into all the intricacies, stories, and dramas that go along with it. That's why it is possible for them to laser in on your problem and see the way clearly.
How. There are several ways to get outside perspective.
Family & Friendsusually have your best interests in mind and know you better than anyone else. But if they are not business owners themselves, it is difficult for them to appreciate and sympathize with what an owner of a design business goes through.
Mastermind groupis an amazing way to get perspective from multiple people at the same time. Especially if organized by a professional coach, masterminds are very effective. Currently, I belong to two mastermind groups, and feel thankful every day for the collective power of everyone's brains that helps me regularly see the solution that I would have never been able to see on my own.
1-on-1 Coaching. When working with a coach one-on-one, you get the benefit of personalized and tailored attention. Just today, I was working with an owner of a design firm, who was struggling to figure out her niche. Literally, within minutes, I was able to zero in on the issue, extrapolate the most important parts, and get rid of everything that was simply clouding her thinking. What's my secret? I'm an outsider, who has the benefit of looking in, having a birds-eye view, and not being tainted by years of the designer's self-talk and sabotage.
If you find yourself struggling in your business, please know that the fastest way out of that struggle is a fresh perspective.
If you tried doing it yourself, but are still overwhelmed, spinning wheels, putting in long hours with little payback, struggling to find clients, not making as much money as you know you deserve, I may be able to help.
Knowing exactly what action to take and stay on track, takes work, business savvy, and accountability. That's exactly why I developed my www.GetItDoneProgram.com. If you've been stuck in one place and wondering what it would take to get you to where you want to be, please check it out.
