Microsoft SharePoint - Utilities and Advantages

SharePoint is a platform developed by Microsoft. It is the platform for running various web applications. This software was built keeping in mind the requirement of numerous organizations. Content and document management are two requirements that require various applications. SharePoint has been built as a single substitution for various applications and other requirements of a web page or website. The utility of this software lies in management on files, portals for intranet and extranet as well. It also develops business intelligence and supports tools for social networking. Apart from this, its application lies in space management, integration of data and information and development solutions for application platforms.

Microsoft SharePoint has been built in order to meet the demands of various organizations simultaneously. It can manage a large number of systems from an individual Server Farm. A server farm is a center which contains various hardware and software elements in order to meet the server requirements of one or more organizations or companies. This product is available in the market for free, Microsoft does not charge for the premium releases of this product. It also provides added functions and integrated features that might be required by the user. SharePoint is used in Business Process Outlets and other similar organizations like Office 365 for Cloud Computing systems. It is often distributed or sold by independent vendors.

SharePoint also helps in customizing a certain web area. That is it is possible to configure and create physical frameworks of networks as per the requirements of its users like companies, offices etc. in fact customization is one of its prime advantages and attracts a lot of clients to it. This is achieved through configuration techniques based on granular governance. Such configurations bring with it functions like editing of pages and storage structures for files etc. but its chief advantage is the customization property that can be achieved by a third party as well, in the form of sections which are technically known as web parts.

The web applications of Microsoft SharePoint are spread across a variety of features. The top level containers in this software act as a user-interface. The applications are mapped through links or URLs which are thoroughly stored in the SharePoint console. The definitions of each app are maintained in the central management feature of this software. These mapped links are automatically copied into the IIS of the machine. This mechanism of copying into the IIS helps the web apps to run easily without any dependency. In fact each application has its own pool and is started from there itself. The web applications are supposed to have their own collection of sites which are known as SharePoint sites. These groups of sites are connected to their own databases or with that of the specific application that they belong to.

Server Applications and Central Administration are two other features that come with this software. User Profile and Search Indexing Service are provided by SharePoint as Server apps. One of the main requirements of such server apps is independency. They are starting, shutting down or reloading must depend on themselves irrespective of other server farms. The applications are built to handle their own errors and failure reasons. Central Administration is a feature that can be supported by a single server in a server farm. This feature helps to integrate and manage both server and web applications from a central management console.
