Will Modern Comics Ever Be Valuable One Day? Comic Investing Advice!

Quite a bit of people are wondering will Modern comics ever be valuable one day and if they should consider investing in them? The answer is pretty complex, but I'll try my best as to what I think about the question from my own personal experience.

As most readers of my blog know, I'm not a big fan of Modern comics as investment choices. Sure, there are some valuable ones out there, but not a lot. A lot of the problem is because there's too many of them floating around at very high grades.

It's exactly the opposite of Silver Age comics where there aren't many copies of comics from that age floating around 9.4 Near Mint. Modern age comics have a lot of copies floating around at grades even higher than a 9.4.

However, the question is will comics from the modern age ever be valuable. For the majority, the answer is a big fat whopping no! Unless you're talking about a few very limited variant covers, most modern age books wont be very valuable and here's why:

1. Unlike the old days, too many people are conscious of taking care of their comic books. That means a lot of people are bagging and boarding them, hoping one day they'll be valuable.

2. Even if there are low print modern age cover variants, I doubt those comics will be as in demand as a Silver Age X-Men #1 or the first appearance of Iron Man.

3. Unless a huge natural disaster happens there will be way too many copies and high grade copies floating around in the market, which strengthens my point in number one.

So which modern comics will be valuable someday. The high grade key issues of a popular character or event. Characters like the first appearance of Gambit or Carnage are pretty valuable already. However, if you want to invest in these comics, you'll want the highest grade you can afford. A Near Mint 9.4 wont cut it.

You'll want a 9.6 to 9.8, and not just any regular issue. Key issues. Just like Silver Age and Bronze Age comics, the most valuable will always be the important key issues. If you're aiming for modern age comics, buy ones that are CGC graded.

Thirty years from now will modern age comics be valuable? Maybe. Maybe not. Will Silver Age comics be valuable thirty years from now? Yep and even more so.

Silver Age Comic Books! The New Gold Rush In Investments!

If you think that comic books aren't worth investing in, think again. It's been proven over and over that comics can be quite profitable. However, in this day and age, your best bet in comic investments are Silver Age comics, and this article will give you the reasons why.

Modern comics are those comics published from 1992 until now, although many debate about the exact dates, and have way too many copies floating around the market. Even worse is that many of these copies are high grade.

This is not the case with Silver Age comics. The books from the Silver Age era were meant to be disposable, much like newspapers. Even more so, kids of that era did not take very good care of them. Very few thought that these readable treasures would one day be valuable, unlike the frame of mind today.

That's, perhaps, one of the biggest reasons why I concentrate most of my investments within the Silver Age era. Another reason why is because this was when the comic book industry shifted it's market largely toward the superhero genre.

A lot of the popular characters we know of today made their very first appearances during the Silver Age era. Spider-Man made his debut during this time, as well as characters from The Fantastic Four, The X-Men (original team), Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers, etc.

So during this time period of comics a lot of popular 1st appearances were made in the industry. These characters are popular today and in demand. That means many of the 1st appearances of a character's most popular villains also made their debut during the Silver Age of comics.

The hype of comic movies from Hollywood has also heightened the demand for such key issues. With the recent Thor movie, demand for the 1st appearance of The Destroyer rose as well as The Sandman's 1st appearance in Spider-Man 3.

Older comics are more rare and that's because they have less in circulation within the comic market as opposed to newer comics, but that's not the only reason they are so valuable. So many of the popular characters came from that era, as well as their villains.

It's harder to create a comic character today that will have the same impact as Spider-Man or many of the characters created during the Silver Age. Sure there are popular new characters but nothing compared to the older characters. Will new characters stack up within the test of time? Perhaps, but very few.

With a little bit of know-how, you can start investing in Silver Age comics and profiting from these investments as well. You just need to learn what to look out for.

Money Management for Financial Markets

If you are serious about trading on any kind of time frame you have to know what you are going to risk before you buy or sell short. This is true in any kind of business. With the stock market you can be extremely specific on your loss expectations because of the vast amount of liquidity in the markets. With a stock exchange that is open 24 hours a day 5 ½ days a week there is ample opportunity to know your risks.

In order to succeed in any kind of venture you have to treat it like a business. You wouldn't start a successful retail business without planning the various aspects of what to market and who you are going to market towards. You must treat trading the same way. Far too many beginners haphazardly start trading thinking they will make quick fortunes. That is nothing more than a mental trap. The stock market is, as much if not more, a mental business than the technical and fundamental information it trades on. Opening an account without a game plan is a plan for disaster.

If you are brand new to trading you should go out and open a practice account. It is critical that you treat this account like it is real money. Don't leave trades open that you would profit on with real money and don't let losers run. You need to prove to yourself that you are a successful trader, and to do that you need to see the beginning balance grow, no exceptions or excuses. After you have successfully added value to your account over a 3 month time period is it acceptable to start trading live.

It is imperative that you always review and journalize your trades. You can learn a great deal from winning and losing trades. Always take the time to review outcomes and brainstorm possible new ideas. This could help you find better exit areas or improve moving stops to breakeven and so forth. There is always room to learn and improve your trading plan it just needs time and commitment.

There are many simple and complex money management strategies available to investors and traders alike. For this discussion I am going to keep it simple. This money management system should be used for your demo as well as your live trading account. There is no point in testing a trading system and money management strategy to completely change it when you go live. This may seem obvious but many people go big when they think they know which way the market is going. Even with a strategy that you prove to be successful, let's say 90% of the time, you can blow an account with haphazard risk profile or lack of one.

A good approach is to start small. The problem with beginner traders is their accounts are generally small. This is generally less than $20,000. It is difficult to watch perfect trades from execution to closing only make you several hundred dollars. A good way to think about this is to duplicate the strategy with an account that is 10x your size. Would you hold on to this same trade if that several hundred dollars was now several thousand dollars or more? The whole process is about gradually building your account. Albert Einstein said compound growth is the 8th wonder of the world. This is what needs to be on your mind at all times.

So let's get to this basic money management system. It is actually quite simple in theory. You need two variables before you enter your trade. Where will I enter the trade and where will I exit if the market proves me wrong. Being proven wrong can be hard to handle at first but it is a certainty in stocks, bonds, futures, and forex markets. You need to have the exact price you want to stop yourself out and where you will enter. This can be decided on by many factors but we will leave these fundamental things for a different discussion. Now you have your stop and entry price. Simply plug these numbers into a calculator and get a spread. EX. Enter SNDK short at 47.46 with a stop set at 50.77. 50.77-47.46= $3.31. This means there is $331 at risk for every 100 shares you purchase. You would need to take your account value and calculate 1-3% to determine how much money you should risk. 3% is towards the high side and should really be used for more experienced traders after you have proven yourself on a live account (probably a year but this is a personal judgment). So let's assume you have $50,000 in your trading account. $50,000 *.02 = $1000.00. So you can risk one thousand dollars on this trade. Now you need to calculate how many shares to purchase so you only risk $1000.00 or less. Always round down. This would be 302.115 rounded down to 302 shares. This is calculated by (1000/3.31).

There are many more strategies that are based off this simple approach. We will go into more detail about how to manage the trade after you have entered a trade and how to strategically exit the trade. Come back in the following days and weeks for more information on stocks, bond, futures, and forex markets.

Good luck trading and always keep building your knowledge and account.

Stamp Collecting - A Hobby or Investment?

Knowing that stamp collecting is a hobby of mine, a friend asked me to pen a few words on my thoughts on whether I regard stamp collecting as a hobby or investment since I have spent a not too insignificant amount of hard-earned money on this hobby of mine.

An English schoolmaster, Rowland Hill, invented the adhesive stamp in 1837 and the first issued postage stamp, the British Penny Black stamp, was released on May 6, 1840. The Penny Black may be the first issued, but it is not the most expensive as one could buy a good one at about £200-£300 from any good store selling stamps in the United Kingdom. The 1885 Swedish 'Treskilling Yellow' mis-print is now considered by many as one of the most if not the world's most expensive stamp when sold in 1996 at £1.59 million. That being the case, should one consider serious stamp collecting a hobby or investment?

My interest in stamps goes back to the days when I was a little boy admiring the beautiful little pieces of paper stuck on the top right hand corner of an envelope. Ignorant as I was then, I would just peel the stamps off the envelopes, often tearing bits off it in the process, and keep the stamps in a shoe box. Not that I have a lot them, but I needed a big box to store the envelopes prior to peeling off the stamps.

As I grew to take a more than cursory interest in stamps, I discovered that I was doing it all wrong in the way that I went about collecting stamps. Books on stamp collecting for beginners were practically non-existent in bookstores in the town where I lived and so it was a difficult learning process that I had to go through to learn the finer points in stamp collecting. As my stamp collection grew in quantity and quality, especially after I started earning an income and thus able to buy the stamps I fancied and could afford, I discovered the ordeal of having to store the stamps. No longer was I collecting stamps only, but also First Day Covers and other philately materials of interest. Shoe boxes were no longer the correct storage media and substantial funds (based on my meager income then) had to be expended to buy stamp albums and other paraphernalia essential to properly collect, store and display stamps.

Fast forward to the present time, my stamp collecting hobby has now been transformed from a small boy's fancy in beautiful pieces paper and collecting all sorts and sundries to a more specialized and intentional effort in collecting stamps based on selected countries and themes. The opportunity to work internationally afforded me the access to build my collection at a faster and less costly rate and I believe I now have a notable collection by my standard (bearing in mind I am only an amateur collector with limited funds) that includes a priceless collection of a particular country's stamps. Priceless because I cannot put a price to it because very few have interest in that country's stamps in the early days and the only other similar collection I have seen is in a museum.

So, would one consider my interest in stamp collecting a hobby or investment? I would reckon it depends on one's intention with regards to the collection. Will I be selling it anytime soon or never, as it is intended to be a family heirloom? Also, is my collection investment grade and will there a buyer interested? The jury is still out and details pertaining to serious stamp collecting for investment purposes will need to be left for another day. In the meantime, I am enjoying stamp collecting as a hobby that could possibly turn out to be a highly profitable investment.

Buying Or Selling Small Businesses - Available For Sale Online

If you're curious in becoming a business entrepreneur or have an online business for sale, the internet can be an interesting and efficient approach of taking either one of those steps. Furthermore, you may attain whatever you set out to carry out if you are planning thoroughly, carry on cautiously and steer clear of behaving hastily.

In case you want to buy a business online, begin by detailing the categories that ultimately don't get your interest, and remember that if a business for purchase is in the marketplace, there's a 50% probability that is a retail shop, gas station or an eating venue. Subsequently, ascertain the sum of cash you are prepared to devote to this opportunity and jot it down, in order of their value, the offers you are looking forward to have. This may include the number of personnel, the period of time the business has been running, the place, and various other specifics.

Knowing the right business once you see it

This is actually the one that may prosper through your skills and won't be destroyed by your deficiencies. Once you think of yourself working the business, which involves loads of work, it must also be one that you are going to enjoy (which will bring about your ability to succeed), and one which will probably make you feel very proud to become the owner.

Once you begin your internet lookup, you could possibly feel confused by the wide variety of business enterprises that are available for purchase. When this happens, use a methodical strategy, and as you go through the listings put emphasis on the cost in comparison to the profits. Keep in mind that listings on the web don't often provide a complete picture, and you would like to use the "call us" tab to have your issues solved. When that is done to your satisfaction, you can carry on from there.

Putting Your Own Business In The Marketplace

In case you come to a decision that the time has come to sell a business, this could be also achieved on an online site. Some of them provide details on this topic, calculators for arriving at a selling price, and lists of businesses very much like yours, showing whatever they recently distributed for just lately in your town. Normally, such sites only charge a nominal fee - less than $100 per year- for indexing your business. Many of them also provide quality services at a bit increased rate.

Steering clear of brokers' fees

Let's say you sell a business exclusively by yourself, it can save you from 5% to 10% in sales percentage that you'd probably pay to a business agent, and so this is definitely something you'll want to have a shot at. Be certain that the internet site you utilize ensures that the sale will likely be taken care of as private. Complications will surely come up in case the word gets to your employees, your providers and your customers and they discover that the business is changing hands before you want them to.

You should also know that marketing a business online normally works perfectly for a franchise and minor retail outlets, like dining places, dry washing shops and gas stations. They may be relatively simple to examine and also have a special charisma to those who wish to buy a business online.

A Prestigious Address Comes Whenever You Rent Serviced Office Space

A business that is in the process of being set up would be much better served by going for a furnished office rental. A place like this comes well equipped with many features that a regular office would not always have readily available. The moment you step in through its doors, you easily get the feeling of being able to do business right away. There are meeting and conference facilities that will allow you to meet with clients, a live receptionist service that will take all your incoming calls and messages, and a dedicated internet access that will allow you to reach your clients without any delay. Why spend more time going through the headache of setting up when you can just simply walk in and start getting down to business? Here are some of the benefits why you should rent serviced office today.

Flexibility is something you get when you go for a furnished office rental. For example, a small start-up will not require so much space at the onset. As your business begins to expand and you start building up a client base, you can get additional work space depending on your needs. You can customise your contract depending on the needs of your business. Do you see your business as a test case or is it something you envision to have long term success?

These are the questions that can be easily answered once you rent serviced office space such as this. A business office solution of this nature comes fully furnished, with conference halls, training facilities, a highly sophisticated telecommunication service system, high speed net access, highly skilled administrative support services, photocopying, and mailing services. Another thing is that a furnished office rental has defined costs. Instead of having to figure out your fixed expenses at the end of each month, you can get all this information up front so you will know how much you have to allocate. For instance, if you decide to set up an office space yourself, you will have to figure out the cost for each item. In the case of internet connection, you may have to pay for every single connection.

If you rent serviced office space, the cost will already be built in. This allows you to have a much easier time when it comes to your bookkeeping and reduces any unforeseen headache that comes with running your own office. The problem with do-it-yourself solutions is that you can fall into the trap of going over your budget.

There are also extras that come whenever you rent serviced office space. These can be made use of on an as-needed basis. When you are in the process of setting up your company, hiring a receptionist will be the farthest thing on your to-do list. What normally happens is that you are trying to save as much of your resources so hiring one depending on your needs will definitely go a long way. Apart from saving money, you also save on the space that will be needed to accommodate additional staff and office equipment.

Carol Snider wants to find a serviced office for rent to conserve on his start-up costs and recommends that these undertaking the same activity look for the advice of companies that concentrate on serviced office space.

What Does The Durbin Amendment Mean To Small Business Merchants In America?

The so-called Durbin Amendment was originally set to have taken effect on July 21st, 2011. This component of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was to have set a proposed maximum debit card interchange fee of 12 cents for both pin debit and signature card debit transactions, only for banks that had $10 billion or more in assets. This worked out to be a 70% reduction in the average debit card fee ($.44) according to the Fed.

The final rules issued raised the maximum Interchange fee to $.21 per transaction, with an additional allowance of 5 basis points of transaction value to account for fraud costs. And included an interim proposed rule to allow banks to charge an additional $.01 cent per transaction if they meet certain fraud prevention standards established by the Fed.

Bottom line, merchants remain the winners through these Interchange expenses decreases while issuing banks are still the biggest losers, but not as much as originally feared.

When Do The New Merchant Services Rules Go Into Effect?

The final rules will go into effect on October 1, 2011. But beware, only a small portion of the nation's merchant community will receive the benefit of the reduced fees beginning on October 1st. Most of the merchant population is at the mercy of their acquirer's pricing strategy as to the timing and the amount of reduced fee benefit they actually receive.

Beware Of Tiered or ERR Merchant Services Pricing Programs!

If your merchant services pricing program is tiered, or your merchant statement is coded with "BB" or "ERR," watch out! You are paying hidden mark-ups and down-grade fees that you are unaware of, and you will likely be receiving little, if any of the savings provided for by the Durbin Amendment.

How to Make Sure Your Merchant Services Provider is Passing the Durbin Savings On To You!

Only those merchants on a "True" Interchange Pass-Through pricing program will receive the full savings benefit. So make sure you are on an Interchange Pass-Through pricing program that passes all Durbin Amendment savings through to you. Ask your provider to be honest with you and tell you the truth that your merchant services pricing program has no hidden fees or markups, and that they have not raised their rates in 15 or more years. This helps to ensure that your merchant services provider is really passing through the savings to you, both today, and for many years into the future!

Will This Affect All Debit Cards?

Not all debit cards are affected by the Durbin Amendment. As mentioned earlier, smaller banks with less than $10 billion in assets are exempt from the new Fed ruling, so they may continue to charge at their current rates. For merchants, this means that the debit card presented by the consumer you run through the credit card machine determines what interchange fee you pay. Thus, there will be a two-tiered debit card pricing structure.

Limitations on Payment Card Network Restrictions

The law mandates that every debit card transaction has to be able to be processed on at least two networks, rather than one. What this means is an issuer is in compliance by having ONE network for processing signature debit and ONE unaffiliated network for processing pin debit transactions. And merchants are empowered by the law to direct the network routing as they see fit, in advance, with the acquirer.

In addition, for credit card payment transactions as well as debit, the law empowers merchants to restrict payments up to a minimum of $10 per sale and to set maximum payment amounts. The choice is now yours to make to better manage your payment card costs.

Beware of trying to select a lower cost processing network over a higher cost network without evaluating what, if any, additional fees exist for the service. And it is a dynamic market which routinely changes as the networks jockey their rates as they compete with each other. And now many merchant services providers are coming out with a new additional monthly fee charge for "lowest cost routing services", that will often increases your total costs per transaction and hurt, not help, your bottom line!

The only way to decide which network to select or if the additional costs for "lowest cost routing services" is worthwhile, rather than wasteful, is to analyze your actual transactions processed by network provider. What's "right" for one merchant may be very "wrong" for you, because the ultimate cost you pay is determined by the card product presented by your consumers. And those products vary widely by geographical region

Get Professional Help For Choosing The Best Processing Network

Make sure you choose a merchant services company that is able to perform a skilled merchant statement analysis by processing network, and has the knowledge base of what ALL of the available processing networks are charging for services, to determine which processing network is most advantageous to your business. This merchant services company should be honest, forthright, and transparent in its presentation, as well as financially sound in its analysis.

PIN Debit Cards In Greater Demand- Make Sure To Have a PIN Pad!

With the loss of debit Interchange revenue, the bloom is off of the signature debit card bush. The fat profits on the expensive to merchants "rewards" cards are long gone. Pin debit only allows a transaction to go through if the card can be read electronically, the pin matches, and there is adequate money in the account. These three security measures help fight fraud and lower costs for banks that issue debit cards. Issuers will want the added protection against fraud that pin debit products offer, so expect to receive many more pin debit card presented for purchases at your store. Merchants also enjoy less exposure to charge-backs, stolen cards, disputes, etc. with pin debit.

If you don't already have one, make sure to purchase a pin pad from your merchant services provider to go with your credit card machine.

MerchantService.com provides leading edge credit card processing and business management solutions to merchants through a consultative approach by educating merchants on credit card interchange fees and practices to ensure they are receiving the best possible rates when accepting electronic payments. MerchantService.com delivers expertly consulted merchant services with a focus on increasing merchant bottom-line profits.
